My Name Is MUFC: This Superfan Who Fought to Alter His Name

Pose the question to any Man United supporter who is older about the importance of May 26th, 1999, and they will tell you that the date was life-altering. It was the moment when dramatic late goals from Sheringham and Solskjær secured an stunning come-from-behind victory in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich at the famous Barcelona stadium. Simultaneously, the world of one United fan in Eastern Europe, who has died at the 62 years old, was transformed.

Aspirations Under Communism

That supporter was given the name Marin Levidzhov in a small Danube town, a place with a modest number of residents. Being raised in a socialist state with a passion for football, he longed to adopting a new name to… his beloved club. Yet, to claim the name of a organization from the Western world was mission impossible. If he had attempted to do so before the fall of the regime, he would likely have faced imprisonment.

A Commitment Sealed by Fate

Many seasons after the fall of the regime in Bulgaria – on that night in May 1999 – Marin's personal goal came one step closer to achievement. Tuning in from home from his simple residence in Svishtov and with the score against them, Marin swore an oath to himself: should his team mount a comeback, he would do anything to become known as that of the object of his devotion. Then, a miracle occurred.

He realized his ambition to see the Theatre of Dreams.

A Protracted Court Struggle

The next day, Marin consulted an attorney to express his unusual request, thus starting a grueling process. The parent who inspired him, from whom he had gained his fandom, was deceased, and the man in his thirties was residing with his mom, working all kinds of odd jobs, including as a builder on minimal earnings. He was hardly making ends meet, yet his dream became an obsession. He soon became the talk of the town, then gained worldwide attention, but many seasons full of court cases and setbacks in litigation were to come.

Trademark Issues and Limited Success

Marin’s wish was rejected initially for intellectual property issues: he was barred from using the title of a internationally recognized entity. Then a presiding magistrate ruled partially in his favour, saying Marin could alter his given name to the city name but that he was prohibited from using the second part as his official surname. “But I don’t want to be named after a city in the UK, I want to bear the identity of my cherished club,” Marin stated during proceedings. The struggle continued.

His Beloved Cats

When not in court, he was often tending to his pets. He had plenty of them in his garden in Svishtov and cherished them equally with the Red Devils. He gave each one a name after United players: such as Vidic and others, they were the celebrity pets in town. Which was the favourite cat of the name they used? A kitty called Beckham.

Marin bedecked in United gear.

Advances and Ethics

Marin managed another breakthrough in court: he was permitted to include the club name as an official nickname on his ID card. But still he wasn’t happy. “I won’t stop until my full name is the club's title,” he declared. His tale attracted commercial propositions – a chance to have club products branded with his legal name – but even with his monetary challenges, he declined the proposal because he refused to make money from his adored institution. The Manchester United name was inviolable.

Goals Achieved and Enduring Symbols

A documentary followed in that year. The production team made his aspiration come true of visiting Old Trafford and there he even had the chance to see Dimitar Berbatov, the national team player on the team's roster at the time.

Permanently marked the team emblem on his face subsequently as a protest against the court decisions and in his last few years it became ever tougher for him to continue his legal battle. Job opportunities were scarce and he lost his mother to the pandemic. But somehow, he found a way. By birth a Catholic, he was christened in an orthodox church under the name Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. “Ultimately, my true name is recognized with my chosen name,” he used to say.

Earlier this week, his life came to an end. Perhaps now the club's persistent fan could achieve eternal tranquility.
